Benaouf Adaoui - the man who ignited the Mocro War and planned one of the Netherlands' most spectacular prison escapes

// intel brief

Benaouf Adaoui, known as Ben, is arguably the single most important catalyst of the Mocro War - the decade-long feud between Dutch-Moroccan criminal factions that has claimed dozens of lives across the Netherlands and Belgium. Born in Eindhoven in 1987 to a Moroccan family, Ben moved to Amsterdam in his early twenties and rapidly embedded himself in the cocaine trade. His orchestration of the murder of Najeb Bouhbou at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Antwerp in October 2012 set off a chain of retaliatory killings that became the bloodiest underworld conflict in modern Dutch history. After surviving multiple assassination attempts - including the infamous Staatsliedenbuurt shooting where over 50 rounds hit his Range Rover, killing two associates while Ben escaped by jumping into a canal - he was arrested in June 2013 and sentenced to 12 years for the Bouhbou murder. From his cell in Roermond prison, Ben continued directing criminal operations using smuggled PGP phones, maintaining hit lists and recruiting shooters. In October 2017, Ben orchestrated a Hollywood-style helicopter escape involving a Colombian pilot hired for EUR 100,000, multiple getaway teams with automatic weapons, and elaborate diversionary tactics. Dutch police, tipped off by suspicious airport employees, launched a counter-operation that foiled the escape, resulting in one accomplice being shot dead by police. The failed escape cost Ben his early release eligibility and led to the discovery of further evidence of hit coordination from prison, adding years to his sentence. He remains imprisoned in high-security facilities to this day.
