// intel brief

Inez Weski was one of the Netherlands' most prominent criminal defense lawyers for over four decades. She represented drug lord Desi Bouterse, arms dealer Guus Kouwenhoven, and - most fatefully - Ridouan Taghi in the Marengo trial. In April 2023, she was arrested on charges of participating in Taghi's criminal organization by passing encrypted messages between him and the outside world while he was detained in the EBI maximum-security prison. The prosecution alleges she exchanged over 8,000 Sky ECC messages with Taghi's son Faissal, discussing drug shipments, money laundering, and organizational operations. Her case raises fundamental questions about attorney-client privilege: where does legitimate legal representation end and criminal complicity begin? Adding to the controversy, she was held for nine days at a secret underground location at Kamp Zeist - later ruled illegal by the Justice Inspectorate. Her substantive trial begins April 2, 2026 in Rotterdam's extra-secured courtroom.
